Safe Communities Coalition Sponsors First Permanent Prescription Drug Drop Box in Hunterdon County
For the past two years, the Safe Communities Coalition – Hunterdon/Somerset (Coalition) has participated in the DEA’s National Take-Back Days as well as the American Medicine Chest Challenge. One way to reduce the accessibility of prescription drugs is to properly dispose of them in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. These take-back days provide locations throughout the county where individuals can dispose of expired, unused and unwanted medications, no questions asked.
Coalition Initiatives
Private Property Ordinances (PPO): Hunterdon County (HC) had one of the lowest percentage rates (8%) in NJ for the passage of Private Property Ordinances. With the help of the Coalition, 33% of county municipalities now have a PPO: Readington, Lambertville, Milford, Raritan Township, and Flemington Boro. Franklin will vote at the October Town Council meeting.

Private Property Ordinance - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this ordinance violate privacy rights?
A: No, police must have probable cause before they enter private property, just as they would today. The ordinance would not change or violate any privacy rights. This ordinance would be in effect once police are already on the scene.
Q: Aren’t there laws already in place?
A: Serving alcohol to a minor without the permission or presence of a parent is already a disorderly person’s offense in the state of New Jersey. What would change under this ordinance is it would become a violation for youth to possess or consume alcohol on private property if their parent has not given permission and is not present.
